Every two years, the entire student body of Tawa Intermediate steps away from the traditional classroom environment to embark on a major outdoor education camp. This biennial experience ensures that during their two crucial intermediate years (Years 7 and 8), every single student gets the chance to participate in an immersive Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) program. Held at the Makahika Outdoor Pursuit Centre, nestled beautifully in the native bush at the foothills of the Tararua Ranges, this residential camp is designed to build a strong, inclusive school culture, forge deeper peer relationships, and give students a shared milestone that defines their intermediate journey.
At Makahika, students are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones through a philosophy of "challenge by choice" in a safe, professionally managed environment. The customized multi-day program packs in a dynamic range of adventure activities, including a thrilling 170-meter zip line, high and low ropes courses, orienteering, bushcraft, and wilderness survival training. Guided by industry-qualified instructors, Tawa Intermediate students work collectively to solve problems, navigate outdoor trials, and learn practical teamwork. Ultimately, the experience focuses on building personal resilience and confidence, leaving students with unforgettable memories and life skills that they carry back to their school community and beyond.
The next Camp is scheduled to be held May 2027.
